MOLD AND MILDEW HAZARDS
We can think of no
single incident that could better illustrate the terrible hazards of
mold than the one that follows.
A MOLD "HORROR STORY"
Rain King received a call from the family of an elderly
woman who was hospitalized. The family wanted to prepare this
woman's home for sale since it was apparent that she would no longer
be able to live alone if she were fortunate enough to recover from
the illness, which was quite serious.
The family asked Rain King's technicians to come in and
assess the condition of the home, with the view of preparing it for
sale.
During a preliminary inspection of the home, it was found that a
chronic leak in the basement had caused a great deal of moisture in
the basement walls. It was clear that water abatement and
other measures would be necessary.
As the inspection continued, one of Rain King's
technicians also went to evaluate the attic space.
Upon entering the attic, the technician found the
attic was completely filled with mold.
The mold in the attic was caused, incredible as it
might seem, by the leak in the basement!
Due the excessive moisture in the basement, the mold found ideal
conditions for growth in the wall spaces. Once established,
the mold continued on up through the walls and filled the attic
space above.
HOSPITAL MAKES SIMILAR
DISCOVERY!
Following Rain King's alarming discovery, it was later
learned by the hospital doctors that this poor woman and former
homeowner had become dreadfully ill and was near death as a result
of this same mold! -- a hazard she was not even aware existed in her
own home!
The mold had invaded the ventilation system of her home, and she
was breathing it in daily. In fact, her entire body was
infected with this mold. It was 8 months before she could
leave the hospital, and it is fortunate indeed that she was finally
able to recover.
This real-life mold "horror story" is not intended to frighten
you, but simply to alert you to the very real threat posed by
unchecked mold and mildew in a home.
WHAT EXACTLY IS MOLD and
WHY DOES IT GROW?
Mold is a species of fungus which reproduces itself by means of
microscopic spores.
It serves the purpose in nature of causing the decomposition of
dead plant matter. It does this by consuming and digesting
organic matter, in particular cellulose.
This activity of mold is what prevents an enormous accumulation
of dead plants, trees and leaves on our planet.
SO WHY DOES MOLD OCCUR
IN MY HOME?
Cellulose is also found in a wide variety of the building
materials used in your home, such as the cardboard in drywall, the
wood used to frame the walls and provide finish molding.
Cellulose is also found in many fabrics containing organic
material such cotton and carpets, wool and silk.
Mold will feed on the cellulose found in all these sources, and
will also feed on dust and any other form of organic matter that is
available in your home.
When high levels of moisture and humidity are present, countless
thousands of mold spores, many of which may have previously been dormant, will
begin to reproduce and grow in the form of mold
and mildew.
This can happen very rapidly -- even in just a matter of
days or hours!
MOLD, MILDEW AND ILLNESS:
PROTECT YOUR HEALTH!
Enclosed areas where moisture is present, such as basements,
crawl spaces, wall spaces, and attics, offer ideal conditions for
the growth of mold, mildew and the proliferation of mold spores that
lead to chronic allergies, asthma, even possible lung disease
and other illnesses.
The result can be deadly, as in our mold "horror story" shared
above, or at least injurious to your health in one degree or
another.
You don't ever want to treat this hazard lightly.
Whether you see mold or not, wherever moisture exists, mold and
mildew are not far behind, and may already exist in areas of your
home where it is not yet visible.
HOW CAN I PREVENT MOLD
IN MY HOME?
Mold spores are found everywhere on this planet, so it is
essentially impossible to eliminate mold spores completely from our
homes.
What can be done, though, to effectively prevent mold spores from
multiplying and then springing to life in the form of mold and
mildew, is to eliminate the single most necessary element to mold
growth: moisture.
